Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. She was only a young teenager when her father who was the carnival barker, passed away. Her mother had to take on jobs including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth attended the school in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. She quit the institution she was in within two years of her education to pursue the profession of acting. The route she took was not without obstacles. When she was in New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. her dream of performing in the theater she wanted eluded. Following a short time as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home and quit the job she was working in. There, she made enough money as an usherette in the morning, while at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She was a drama student at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
